Edmonton, July 1961

It's funny how you'll find solid little gems in the strangest places! I bought a pile o' slides from somewhere I've never heard of in Ontario, and lo and behold there are some wonderful shots of my hometown in it. There are some other magnificent finds in this lot too, and I'll share those sooner than later, but these come first. Most of these are downtown Edmonton, but you'll recognize some other locations too. So fresh, so young, so fabulously 1961.

Classy ladies.

Got a bit of turmoil at the moment, my uncle is on his way out of this mess on earth. Seeing my grandma and ma in full-blown mother mode certainly makes me appreciate the efforts people who love each other will put in when the shit hits the fan. Here's to classy dames.

Meet Beatrice Jones.
This one marked simply, "Senior Citizens"
Aug '62, Kodachrome. Writing almost impossible to read, I think it says, "Gielze Crosby. Gen and Mike on Lurlne 1962 Home bum." Yeah - that's for sure what it says.

She looks like a firecracker, doesn't she? No writing on the slide, Kodachrome, Dec '73.

Swarthmore Football, 1963.

Sometimes in a girl's life, she has to re-install windows and has crisis after crisis at work and can't do the things she really wants to do like scan slides. But then, with a little perseverance and few free minutes, she can get back to those slides and finally share some gems. Check out these fabulous fifteen, from a beautiful fall day in Pennsylvania, 1963. No wonder americans love football so much!

The donkey is amazing, isn't it? Just a fantastic shot. I love S-Girl's hair and enthusiasm too. Here's two more from a different day:

Photos for a reduced-calorie diet.

Ah January: the month of big goals. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of us resolve (even secretly, even if we defiantly declare we gave up resolutions last year as a resolution) to lose weight, or get in shape, or be more healthy. No problem, The Ferrous Archive is here to help you meet your goals!

The following slides came embedded in some very innocent images of holidays and family, which made them weirder. So if you need a little something to bring to mind to help quell your appetite (that has no doubt grown gargantuan), conjure up these images in your mind's eye. It's not really that these disorders of the skin are particularly extreme, we can certainly find much worse examples elsewhere within a few keystrokes - but there's something unnerving about the way these photos have been taken. Enjoy, in that voyeuristic way you always do...

Tortured lady-arms. She dressed pretty just for this occasion.
This man's skin looks fine to me, but what lies beneath the mask?
Surely your heart goes out to this guy. The shine makes my skin crawl, and the haircut is cruel.
